Well Dave Simpson has got his hands on a Katana 50 and boy does he like it. He gets some nice tones out of it - in spite of using fairly radical EQ settings (e.g. his Hendrix blues tone) - it's prompted me to start exploring the lead channel which up to now I've haven't bothered with.
It's doesn't hurt that he's a hell of a player and a likeable guy too.

I've just been designing myself a lean-back rack for mine to use it as a foldback monitor, which was always my intention. I still can't get mine to sound good with any gain on it. Clean is fine but as soon as any gain goes on it seems to hit the front end too powerfully instead of blooming.

Here's the rack made from an old kitchen table top I found in my shed. Heck it was thick. Nothing can break but the hinge...or the amp! Really nice and stable too. My biggest conundrum was knowing what angle the feet under the base of the amp should be in relation to the the part that supports the back of it. I drew it at 90 degrees but my brain was telling me that as the arms spread out that angle would change. I have no idea what the maths would be but with bits of cardboard and a couple of rulers I was able to cut the right angle at something like 98 degrees. It might get a lick of varnish or even some black paint but for now I'm happy that I have a stage foldback monitor. It may need a closed back to stop the audience getting some of my mix leaking at them, but that'll be simple to do. It's quite fun to play guitar through too as the sound is projected straight at my face when I'm standing.

It struck me I was missing a chance with the paint job so I did a mock up for use with our band, GoodByePolarBears.

Hmm. Works with bits of sticky card but maybe the mouth could be longer. I might go for this!

You need to make one stand for the Bentonite band as well! You dont want to make us feel neglected do you

Ooh yes. When I throw in a Bentonite song I'll have to excuse myself whilst changing the monitor stand. But what would it depict? I have mockups of a shark and a red tugboat but somehow they wouldn't be at all right. I know that the mineral Bentonite comes from altered volcanic ash. A volcano would be a perfect shape! Ooh. If I got some double action hinges I could open it either way!

Could work. I'll have to do some observational study!

Just listened to Dave's demo and the Katana sounds very hollow, boxy and thin Sure he is a great player but man this is the first time I disliked his tone (Katana's tone maybe? )

It's doesn't hurt that he's a hell of a player and a likeable guy too. Glad to see he's as baffled as I am about those radial controls. I thought it was just me. Didn't really like his sounds. Kind of fake, hollow, plastic. Not like listening to an amp but more like listening to a recording of an amp. Which of course it is because he's recorded it and YouTube have compressed it. But I suspect it had a bit of that character right there in the room. And he seemed to have WAAAAAY too much reverb on most of his stuff here. And not a nice reverb either. On the strength of that video I'd happily go and watch a gig of his 'cos I love his touch and musicality and he reminds me of a very kind chap I used to know at Uni. Come to think of it, he was called Dave, but I wouldn't buy a Katana amp. I'm quite relieved that mine sounds a good bit better than that...sometimes. Maybe it was his mic setup or his room reverbing too much, or too much gain?

Playing through the Katana yesterday in a little jam band setup was a joy and my fave telecaster was bell-like. Then again even the little Blackstar idCore10 sounded good too in a mate's hands. With some epic Roland synth sounds stereoing around and some drum machine rhythms playing now and again, everything sounded nicely balanced. Maybe it's time to forget all the tweakable details and just get on with enjoying the thing.

Everything sounds better after a few beers. Hell, I even think all women look awesome after I've had a few beers Try it again when 100% sober then report back!
