Replaced my strings last night and some will remember that I replaced my saddles for roller ones from e bay, I've put the stock ones on again, the reason was... it felt a little too slinky..I know that's desired by many, and truly if it had a trem I would have kept them on as they roll really well, you could feel the difference, it overall I didn't feel it added anything to the tone... the were a brushed satin chrome, I didn't like the look as much. Anyways back to the subject- I spent some time intonating her last night using a great app with incredible accuracy called pitchlab, it's an iOS app and I ran it on my I pad, this has two modes, a string layout mode and a strobe type affair, with the strobe screen I was able to intonate to the best degree I've ever achieved on any guitar, and the bonus is, the app is free! just pointing this out to help any that may find this info useful.

So spent the morning tweaking, as you do and got the action at 12 fret down to 1.25 mm, applying this measurement to all the strings, so that the bottom of the string was measured to the top of the fret using a string action guage, now she is playing with hardly any pressure, I am thinking of having a crack at lowering the action on the nut to .25...I feel the e, a , d are close but g, b and e could do with lowering... using a tuner it's clear with really accurate open strung tuning, (plus or minus .5cents that a fretted note on first fret is sharp on these strings... however, before I perform this potential bodge up.. I will for once be smart and get a spare bone nut! Ha... I've lost count of the f- ups I've made in the past by not planning ahead for trouble!!!!

Indeed it is sir, one of the best on iOS and I've tried most, sometimes I down load a fe at a time and test them, I find often with tuners software of otherwise, you cannot tune a few guitars using different tuners.. they are just too inaccurate for that....imagine that, you'd think today, a 440 would actually mean just that and be fairly easy to Calibrate!

How is 1.25mm at the 12th fret playable? Is that on both Es? Do you have a really light picking action? Every time I try to lower my action I and up raising it to avoid fret buzz. What relief do you have, and what string gauge? I set the nut height by pressing the strings between 2nd and 3rd fret. I try to get virtually no clearance on the 1st fret.
Just realised the junk Squier acoustic here in my office has <2mm action and almost no relief. Don't remember setting it like that. Downloaded Pitchlab for Android. Not sure it is any better than SoundCorset but it showed my Squier was tuned a semitone up!! I thought it was a bit hard on the fingers.

thats because I set the relief first at fender spec then set the saddles for action, then adjusted the relief to take out the buzz... it's like butter now, there are many ways to get a result. I know it isn't the set way, as described by makers, but it's resulted in the playable guitar action that I wanted with no deficits, give it a go mate... it won't hurt hurt anythungand you can always set it back to fender spec if you prefer.
i use 9-42 strings and the relief starts at fender specs, then ends up where it works for me.

Thanks for the link DefJef. I checked the relief on the SC custom. 0.3mm - 0.012" so about right according to the article. I just screwed the low side of the bridge down to give 1.3mm at the 12th fret and it actually plays without any more buzz than I had before. I think it must be my fingers. Still got a slightly high fret 10 even after levelling and crowning. Trouble is this neck work eats strings.
