Hi everyone,
There's been a new arrival in my household today. A Tele-52. Ordered it on Friday evening, it was dispatched Monday morning and it arrived at 10:00am Wednesday.
The outer box was damaged so I was a bit worried about the condition of the guitar. All was OK though. However I noticed the inner box had been opened, i.e. the original tape had been cut and been re-taped. On inspection the pickguard had feint playing scratch marks on it and no protective polythene on it - so it must have been a return. The pickups did have polythene on them though.
It's a 3 piece body with a well seated neck. The body has a high gloss finish and the neck a matt satin finish and is a C shape. The tuners seem to be pretty accurate without any extra play. The neck relief was perfect - the strings being fractionally just off the frets. It was almost in tune and the intonation was slightly off on the G and D but I fixed that - the rest were spot on. The strings are slightly corroded, (the first time this has happened as my other HB guitars have been fine), so I will replace them. The frets are scratchy when I bend a note so I will give the frets a polish at the same time. According to Cory the cut-out for the controls is not shielded so I will fix that as well.
I've never played a Tele before and was expecting a more twangy sound, (a few elastic band over a tin box type of sound), but I've been pleasantly surprised and the Roswell pickups sound fairly good to my ears. I was half expecting a complete dog of a guitar, given the price I payed, but it is actually a good guitar well worth the money and more. I plan to upgrade the bridge to maybe a Wilkinson with brass compensated saddles, and upgrade the pots. I also planned to change the pickguard to a white one, so the issue of being a 'return' is not a problem. The tuners, so far, seem to be good enough to keep - not like the negative comments I've read on some reviews. So for now, I'm happy to fix just the strings and frets and get playing.
I've uploaded some pics on Imgur - the links are below. Sorry about the quality, but it's not a good day to take photographs here in the UK!
