I have recently started playing the piccolo bass more, which is "bass"ically a long 4 string guitar I have never been a fan of dirt on bass, but I am finding that the piccolo needs some nice drive to get the bluesy tone I am looking for. I have been looking, and trying, but I am not finding that tone with effects (who'd of thought... ), or with tube preamps, although the tube pre does give me some nice tones for other uses. So I guess I need (or want) a tube power section. The issue is that I do most of my recording/playing into a PC, so I need to get the "tone" before it reaches the interface. I am thinking of placing a very small tube combo (or head) mic'd into the interface, but space and volume need to be kept to a minimum.çç So, can you guys recommend anything that would help me obtain what I am looking for? Of course, cheaper is always better

Harley Benton has a new 5 watt head which also comes with an 0,1 , 1 and 5 watt attenuation! Not sure if you can play piccolo bass into the HB 12" vintage cab with Celestion speaker?

Still you will need a nice OD infront of the tube amp to get that nice smooth breakup which you could get with your bass preamp Im sure.

Thanks Che, I forgot to mention one small thing, space is at a premium! My 210 Rumble hardly makes an appearance at home for the same reason I mean the perfect solution would be an effects pedal, which brings me to what you mention about OD. I have decided on a TS clone and an OCD clone for the board, both are on order, but on their own they just dont sound warm enough. I will have to play around with them more when I get mine, running them into the tube pre, but I still don't think it will get me were I want without the tube power section. A tiny tube amp, with the speaker output converted back to line level would be the perfect solution, but I don't have the cash to start on that journey!!

I had been looking at the HT-5, but it was way over what I wanted to spend for this (new at least), but the HT-1 could be just about right! So, I guess I will start watching videos of all you young 6 stringers playing through the HT-1 and see if I can hear any tones I like Thanks MartinB

I did not try many tube amps but I did try the HT-1 and it was the muddiest boomy amp I've ever played (played with G&L Fallout)! Even my HB CG-15 transistor amp sounded MUCH better than that box! Stay away from that one! With all due respect to MartinB's recommendation of course

I did have a HT-1 and I didn’t find it muddy or boomy. The biggest problem it had imo was the clean headroom.

Would the head version be best for you JAC ? Pity they insist on that ISF control instead of tone knobs. I always find the 'British' side of the ISF too muddy to be useful but you never know, it might be just what a bass needs. The "Emulated Output" would be perfect for my needs, if I can get that slight breakup tone out of it without it sounding digital. Does it have wattage tap also? My perfect solution would be the break up that guys like BB got when digging in, but at 1000th of the volume

No wattage tap - it's only 1 watt. Shouldn't sound digital because it isn't. Not a lot of clean, it starts to break up pretty quickly. I've only played a combo version and never heard it emulated or through a bigger cab. It didn't suit me as I seem to like cleaner, open backed combos with a more vintagey sound. This was very modern and direct. Reverb on the R version helped a bit. For bass though you may be looking for a more instant, modern sound rather than the note bloom that I prefer for guitar. Thanks DefJef! The low amount of clean headroom may actually work in my favour, as my aim is to get the slight beakup point at a low volume. My comment about "sounding digital" was for lack of a better description, I find that speaker emulations usually sound a bit "off" to me, although Fender (on the Rumble) and even Zoom seem to be getting the hang of it. My issue is the lack of any music stores here, so I can't really try anything other than small ss combos. All the guitarists I know around here are running Marshall stacks and unless the neigbour lets me knock a hole in the wall, that aint gonna fit!! Even if I did have room, an SVT would get first choice Damn I'm lost in the guitar world... I may have to go back to Bass and Ukulele
