Gain is a ratio and distortion cannot hurt you. No need to be afraid. Yes, it's ugly

Yes, I can hear the differences pretty well on most cases despite just using left earphone (yet to listen it at home).
Baritone 7 sounded insanely better than R457 FF, which was just mush without any clarity. SC Custom with P90s had that thick-ish sound of P90s, but wasn't driving the amp as hard as CST-24HB (which would be pretty good for classic rock songs thanks to its bottom end, but not that good for modern metal). ST-62 sounded much snappier than any other guitar used in the video.

Interesting. I guess I'm past the age of hearing any of this. The bass and the fanfrets were obvious but everything before sounds the same to me, give or take some minimal edge.

The first 2/3s, for the most part sounded largely the same to me (up to 2:32). The last 1/3, while losing clarity of sound, did have more noticeable variations.
Reviewing gear used: Mac OS, Firefox Browser, Skullcandy Earbuds, YouTube video = Not idea monitoring/comparison devices. Method of review: eyes closed, ears open, brain "off" position.
I can't get my brain to reboot now, oh well.

Did not care to watch that video... But to answer your question, l'v had 3 harley's, currently two. All sound different no matter how much gain/distortion/amp settings.. The CST-24 & DC-Custom have similar pickups MWCHB/MWCHBA humbukers. The DC-Custom with the MWCHBA sounds best and way warmer & more lively than the CST-24, since the ones on the CST-24 seem to be ceramics. The ST-62 is a different story, that one had single coils... All in all the MWCHBA pickups sound excellent, at least on the DC-Custom, my all time favorite guitar.(I have a PRS SE in my collection too). So no, not all guitars sound the same.

Sorry, the title was click-bait The video is actually asking the question whether too much gain makes all guitars sound the same. I think it mostly does but some appear to be more discerning.

I have 4 guitars and trust my own ears more than a youtube video! specially one made by agufish, the dude is a boring, one trick pony...

I thought there were real differences. Hell, going from the first to second made it sound like one was out of tune. It seems you're too focused on the distortion, though I think differences might be more obvious on a crunch tone.
P90 sounded best to me, which I was surprised at considering they're not really used for this style of music and I always had it in my head they weren't my kind of pickup.

I don't like P90 pickups much either. I more often play cleanly and the P90s that I have tried/heard have a nasty hard edge to their sound. Had several guitars with them and I still have one, but. That being said, I have to admit when overdriven they kick some serious bottom and I can understand why you thought they sounded better. I did not watch the video. Sorry Leo.
