Hi lads! My bassist would like to play guitar on certain songs of ours where I would play the bass. My fingers dislike the long scale fret distance so am looking at buying a HB Shorty soon. The stock strings must go but thinking what other brands are there that won't kill my wallet? I see people's reviews on HB 40-95 round wounds being very good actually. What is your experience with these? I will be playing Prog Rock style so zingy strings are welcome.

I've got these Höfner strings on all my shot scale basses very good strings for a decent price. I recommend you to replace the stock strings immediately, do not even try them, they are absolute crap!

Strings are a very personal preference, I am fond of D'Addario nickels and all my basses wear them (except for the ones that have flats and the acoustics that have Warwicks).

Yes, I was looking at those hofner as well. D'addario is a bit expensive for me at the moment. Hofner strings have some good and some bad reviews. Same is with the HB Value Strings which are less than half the price of Hofner So no one over at Talk Bass mentioned the HB Value strings?

Sorry Che, I haven't even read the thread so I have no idea what they think of them over on TB. I don't really read much about strings, I started using D'Addario years ago and have continued to do so as I really don't like steel strings, or should I say roundwound steel strings. For the basses that have flatwounds, I am limited to LaBella or GHS Precision Flatwounds, both of which I thing are great, but as flats last forever, I haven't needed to try any others Edited to add: I have tried HB strings, but I did not like the steel so I cannot vouch for how long they last.

...and he changes them every 15 days. I am not sure what kind of player he is, but there are plenty of people who change strings a lot (some every couple of days), even with expensive brands.

I just had a plan to see if I like shorty basses. Presumably a Jazz bass capoed at the second fret is the same as a 30" scale length. If I do that and get some thicker (! !) strings I'll be able to experience a shorty Jazz. I could go even shorter. What's the shortest viable shorty bass? A Jag bass? Don't know if I'd get on with a uke bass. There are a few that are somewhere in between a Uke bass and a short scale (26" etc) but they are not very common. The 28.5" of the Ibanez Mikro (and the J&D shorties etc.) works well for a lot of people. For me personally, 30" is what I prefer, or 34" on a 5 or 6 string. The Squier Jag SS (a great bass!) is 30".

I fancied one of those myself, I would have bought one by now if they were just 1.5" longer (and divorce wasn't so expensive nowadays ) I like this finish:
