I immediatley thought the guy should have gone for a FGN tele which is completely made in Japan (and goes for 699 EUR new / 500 EUR used).

But then I used Google to find this:

The FGN Tele costs 1790 EUR locally in Aussie land.

This is insane - why is Autralia that expensive?

Is there some sort of trade war with Australia and the US at the moment or has it always been this way?

We have been getting screwed for years by the greed of retailers, but there are other reasons too: distance from everywhere (doesn't explain MIJ prices though), small population scattered over huge distances (non-existent economy of scale), Aussie dollar is worth 0.73USD at the present time.

I think it is just Fender doing it, Djangle. Probably Fender dealers in Oz kicked up a stink. I bought a MIM Strat from Thomann for $300AUD less than the cheapest price available here, so I can understand it, but if I can get one for that price, the dealers surely should be able to get one for well less. Or maybe Fender noticed declining sales to Downunder, and did some investigating.

BTW, since 31st July 2018 we now pay GST on imports under $1,000AUD (we only paid GST on over $1,000 previously), so our government is gouging us as well. Great country Australia
