Does anyone own this guitar and give some insights if they think it is a good guitar to start the acoustic journey? www.thomann.de/de/harley_benton_hbcg45.htmI know it´s quite cheap but would not spend too much on my first acoustic. Otherwise I would save some more and go with the Harley Benton Custom Line CLD-16SCE (if I remember correctly this was also recommended around here).

I do not own this guitar but while it could be fun to play, 59 euros gets us rock-bottom insofar as quality is concerned. I think it would be okay for someone totally new to guitars to begin the journey with but not an experienced player like yourself. I predict, if you buy this guitar you will be wanting to upgrade within five minutes. I say give it more time and set your sights higher.

I agree with Vincent DerAlex. If it's an auditorium/folk or 000 shape you prefer then the Custom Line CLA16S or CLA15M would be great choices. I'd always prefer an acoustic with a solid top. The GS-Travel Mahogany looks like an upgrade from the CG45 for not much more (although it has a laminate top). It has some good reviews and looks very like the Taylor GS Mini which is closer to £700

Thanks both Vincent and dodger. I find that for electric guitars I lean more and more to higher quality instruments which doesn´t necessarily mean high prices). That´s why I am wondering what would be best for starting on an acoustic. Probably better to start with a good instrument than spending money a few weeks later. I currently find that my electric mahagony/humbucker guitars not that attractive anymore and lean more towards brighter sounding electrics. I also am wondering if a pickup system is useful or not? I will not go on stage with it - just play it at home. Currently I see two options - 1) Harley Benton Custom Line CLA-16S (139 EUR) or 2) going all in with a Harley Benton Custom Line CLD-41S WN B-Stock (215 EUR).

I'm with you there on mahogany/humbuckered guitars. I'm happy as the day is long with my telecaster. I love mahogany. It can look very nice. And I'm quite happy with my Ibanez S, even in the full (not split) positions. Not all humbuckers have a narrow "vintage" frequency range. Having said that, I still want the other side of the world. Even on bass, I have both,

I have 1 of these, and the build quality is on par with the other by acoustics I have ,the cld41 and the clj503. Doesn't sound AS good as the other2 but certainly doesn't sound bad at all with new strings,I did change the soft plastic nut and saddle for bone, and that did improve things. Well worth the 52 pound English I paid..

DerAlex - @chedapapa can advise about the CLD41S WN - seems he likes his very much. I have the previous model (with pickup) and it's a great all-rounder. For the price it's up there with far more expensive models and every bit as good as the Martin DX models that cost a fair bit more. I've been gigging with it for 2 years and loads of people have commented on the sound. I also have the CLA28VE that I use for gigs too and it's as good just a different shape and more focused sound. I think all of the Custom Line models are great value for money and it's hard to go wrong with any of them.

If I would need to change nut and saddle I would definitely go with the CLA16 (or the CLD41). This would cost me at least 100 EUR because I cannot do it myself.

I would stay away from piezzo pickup systems as the pickup sits under the bridge saddle and in my opinion will cut the sustain (almost like sitting on a cushion). I had both CLA-16S and CLD-16M (both good, the mahogany more dark/warm/muddy sounding) and I now have the CLD-41S WN which is a very fine guitar, very projecting and made to sound loud. If you want a guitar for in the house then CLA-16S is a better choice as it will sound better in smaller rooms. My CLD41 sounds best in our large room with high ceilings and out doors. The CLA16S could hardly be heard out doors.
