Hi guys,
A few months ago, I decided it was time for me to buy a valve amp. I've been hestating between Blackstar HT-5 and Peavey 6505 mini head. I'm only playing at home, so I didn't need power, not even a cab, just a very good emulated output.
Being a regular customer for Thomann, my first idea was to go their website, but I could only find the "classical" Blackstar HT-5. I had to go to Gear4music to finally find the HT-5 metal for a very nice price of 333€. Considering the price or the Peavey (498€), the choice was quickly made !
As you can guess, I didn't buy this amp for clean sounds, but for powerful hi-gain distorsion. And really, I LOVE the way this small beast sounds. It works great with all my guitars and pickups (mainly Seymour Duncan and EMG) and gives me a pure metal sound, exactly what I was looking for. The reverb is great, it truly fills the space and playing creamy leads with it is almost orgasmic.
But, about clean sounds... Well, if that's what you're looking for, don't go there. I cannot say clean sounds are bad, but you can only setup tone and volume. No gain settings so I have to play with the volume pot of my guitars to reach for a real clean sound. No low/medium/high settings, so I have to play with my Danelectro fish'nchips EQ to sculpt it. And, most disappointing, the famous ISF pot only works with gain not at all with clean. It's not a problem for me, cos' I play my clean stuffs with my little Harley Benton HBAC-20 but it's something you really have to consider.
The 1X12 speaker is powerful and brings very good sound. About the emulated output, you can chose between 1X12 or 4X12, and I always use 4X12, the sound is amazing, almost as good as a real 4X12 cab. And since I have been talking much enough, I'm gonna let this amp speak through this home made track.
All guitar parts played with Dean Custom 450 (pickups are EMG 81 on bridge and EMG 85 on neck).
