Does anyone use fretwraps on their guitar(s), to mute unwanted ringing from across the nut? Are there other uses? Or is it just a gimmick?

Here's a comparison:
I think it is mostly noticeable when playing with high gain.

Bass players use it differently, but they do strange things anyway, like playing stupidly long guitars…

I'm using fretwraps all the time for my recordings. 2 main uses : 1- mute the strings above the nut (here in Europe, I haven't been able to find a jimmy clip). Useless if your guitar has a Floyd Rose. 2- when playing leads, especially with taping or sweeping, I put the fretwrap on the first fret. Makes me sound cleaner eventhough I always train without it.

To be honest, I've been using my wife's hair skrunchies…. Works like a charm behind the nut, and they're really cheap :-)

I would certainly not buy some special guitar gear for this. I do hear a difference in the first video I linked and I prefer the more complex sound without a wrap. I understand how some metal stuff is better served with it but wouldn't even think of playing that anyway.

Due to musical differences I've decided I can't work with myself any more.

Behind the nut, hair skrunchies are OK. But when it comes to mute the strings for lead parts, they're not very efficient.

Just tried a "real" fretwrap. And indeed, this works much better than a skrunchie.
I'm keeping it!! :-)
