I suppose this is 2 questions, firstly is any pedal essential.
Secondly is a looper essential for a solo hobby guitarist, I mean there are backing tracks out there that you can get, but what if you want to setup your own backing?
Atm I just use guitar rig 5 on my pc and record a track to fiddle about on top of, but it seems like it'd be less hassle if I could just do it in front of one of my amps.

Can be handy if you have an idea that you want to develop. I tend to just record something and then play along because I don't tend to write in a looping format. I think they are a very good idea if you are looking to teach yourself new scales or modes. If you just practice scales from a book with no backing it is not really possible to hear how those scales and modes interact with the chords beneath them. Record or loop a chordal pattern and then play those scales or modes over them and a whole new understanding is revealed. I was watching a video from Richard's guitars, where he uses a looper underneath playing some blues, I personally find it a very useful video and it got me thinking should I get a looper, I have forgotten my scales, I still have the books but it's hard to get them into my brain. I think your idea of putting a chordal pattern down and using the scale/mode is a very good one to reinforce good habits.

The only recording I do is witt a looper (if that's classed as recording?). In my limited experience I find it useful if there is more than 1 guitar part if you know what I mean. I don't loop and loop several times although it is possible to do.

I guess I'll be stuck recording onto my PC for the foreseeable future! I am tempted by a looper though, and a tremolo, and a flanger and a delay and a ..... and so on!

I know it's off topic, how are you now, all settled in after the move?

I know it's off topic, how are you now, all settled in after the move? I'm loving having independence, I had been going back to my parent's house for meal times, but with the new lockdown in place I'm stuck in the flat. But I'm getting my shopping in and plan on getting out for a walk later. So I'm all settled in, got pretty much everything I need now although there are still a couple of little bits and pieces I need to get.

That's good MartinB, I'm glad it's going good for you. 👍 I need to go for a walk this afternoon I think in going down with cabin fever. 🙄
