The affinity is not Squier's cheapest Strat model, I believe the ST20 is HB's cheap Strat. Now I don't have an ST20 so can't comment on it. I do have 2 affinity strats but both have maple fretboards. What I will tell you is the affinity body is not full thickness its about 4mm thinner than a standard Strat. This is no big deal unless you want to start modding the trem block.
The affinities I have, I can't fault for quality of finish. Both had 500k pots which to my ears made them a bit brittle sounding. 250k pots made them sound better but I'm not a Strat lover so the pickups have been swapped.
Tbh I can't see there being much difference in the HB or Squier type strats. I would think a Squire bullet Strat is closer to the ST20 but I may be wrong. The affinities are good guitars in both build quality and playability much like the HB's I have.
You will no doubt get someone slagging off the Squiers. I'm afraid the only advice I can give you is, you really need to try any guitar out. That is the only way you will know if it's a fit with you. I can bang on about any of my guitars being great but that is because I like them and they fit me. Again you will get told single coil pick ups are best by some people others will say humbuckers! Only you will know which you like the sound of. There are no right or wrongs only choices. Hope this helps.

They are very good DefJef I suspect the shredders out there would love them? Probably the best feeling fretboards on any guitar I have but a tad on the slim/thin side for me. I don't know what it is about maple fretboards but they do seem to feel fast. Not that I'm a speed merchant. 😱

A bit of both DefJef I much prefer the thickness on my TE70 and LP type guitars. Anything past the 17th fret is nosebleed country for me. My LP's have 22 frets all the rest are 21. Tbh for my standard of playing and the stuff I play I could probably get away with 12. 😎

My ST20 kicks the Squier Strat Bullet into the long grass if that's any use.
