I think you gain an extra handy socket on the back and those dual knobs on the markII are a good improvement on the mark I...unless you like being hooked up to a computer.
Not totally sure the value of having the head only though, nor what cab you would pair it with. Then again the combo was nastily directional so maybe a less beamy cab might be a blessing.
One of the main reasons I have found to separate the head from the cab is to protect the tubes on an amp, but the Katana being solid state doesn't require this.
I have swapped to a Katana for some recording where I am picking up tube rattle on a mic.

Dave Simpson came to the conclusion his mk2 was faulty as he had the chance to play another mk2 version that sounded just fine. He also found the 50watt combo version to be beamy like defjef described though the 100 watt combo doesn't have this sound issue......apparently.

Interesting that Dave found it beamy too Djangle , although he didn't mention it on his Andertons guest slot. Two things that I did note in that video though were that he says he could play his Kat 50 on '2' over a loud live band and with no mic...I find that very suspicious unless he is maxing everything else he can and uses the Boost function. Maybe he found the ideal EQ setting to achieve that. If so he would have to hook up to the software. I'd love to see his settings for that. The other thing was that Capt Anderton initially thought it sounded a bit woolly but then put that down to the Covid-19 screen that was separating them. I suspect it was more likely to have been where he was sitting in relation to that beaminess.

I've got a habit of skipping a lot of YT content if it's overly long as I have the attention span of a 3 year old but he does mention the 50 can get beamy at times in one of his vids a while back @defjef . As great a player as he is I personally find his tone a bit woolly on occasions but to be fair he does prefer his sound on the dark side and usually has the treble set to zero on most of his amps. It's also worth mentioning that Boss kindly donated him a Katana Artist recently so I'm guessing the 50 will be gathering dust.
