SUPRO and SUPRO
My Supro Westbury LH guitar has now a mate under the form of a Supro 1605R Reverb 1964 Series amplifier...
These amps are costy, and I found the larger models that I tested some years ago very disappointing (Jupiter 1688RT and Saturn 1648RT) with a bassy-dark tone and a metallic-atone reverb...
The little and cute 1605R makes surprisingly a difference : tone is balanced, reverb is decent, and you have a vintage-dirty-smooth sound very suitable for Soul, Blues and Rock'n'Roll.
My long-time pal - owner of our local music shop - called me : "this time, I have something of interest about Supro for you". He was right...
I came - quite suspicious though - with my Supro guitar to test the amp, and good surprise - conversely to his bigger brothers - the 1605R sounded good , no matter the settings I tried to trap it in a muddy tone... No way
So I traded out my mint Marshall Class5 - an excellent amp, indeed - for that Supro which is more suited to the style of music that I play : Soul, Blues and Rock'n'Roll. Since it was a Sept. 2020 2nd amp, I could fortunately have a good deal.
OK, it's not at all a BF / SF Fender kind of tone : it's midrange-centered one, but in a good way, where you can add the right amount of treble and bass. Do not expect hi-gain, despite the presence of a Master Volume : the 1605R is not designed for this. But from subtle dirtyness to solid-compressed crunch, it does it nicely and smoothly, cutting through the mix but never "in your face".
The price tag is high for a brand new one (1169E here in France) but the quality of the building is visible : large silent transformers, PCB with wide paths, what has to be shielded is shielded, cab made from 18mm plywood, finish is flawless (grille is even and straight, covering seams are nearly unvisible), engraved faceplates, damped in a bag reverb tank...
Well, a nice addition to my 5-watters herd...
Cheers,
