Hi, I just recently bought for extremely cheap, a Jazz Bass Vintage Series which needs some repair and some other issues addressed so I'd like to get the opinion and expertise of more knowledgeable members... First, I'd like to be able to pin a model number to it. So what I know and see is ... - it's a Jazz Bass - Vintage Series (says so on the headstock) - it's got a serial number on the back and from what I understand you can't identify HB instruments using a serial n. but the simple fact that one is present might help identify it further since - if I understood correctly - they don't all have a serial number. - there is no 'Made in...' printed anywhere - Wilkinson pickups (I'll get back to that...) - flamed maple neck That's about all I could get from just looking at the bass Now the issues... - It appears the neck pickup was mounted backwards...does that affect the sound? (see picture below) - the neck pot no longer works and is loose. I therefore took out the 3 screws from the metal plate where the pots are attached and had a look and first thing that's obvious, is that there are some wires disconnected! Clearly the previous owner was attempting something which failed. One odd thing though, I was able to easily remove the knobs for the Tone and Bridge Volume pots but not the defective Neck Volume! I pulled really hard, it won't come off? Any ideas? So I'm guessing I'm going to have to buy a new Neck Volume pot, however I know nothing about electronics. Is there any specific model/specs I should be looking for to make sure its compatible? Thanks in advance!!

Sorry for the late reply but I never got a notification of new posts in this thread I started!? Is there a setting I'm missing on the forum because I looked everywhere and couldn't find any setting for email notifications on new posts so I presumed it would be automatic...I guess not Here's the pic of the serial number. I just found another post here that provides as much info as I guess it seem possible to gather about serial n. on HB instruments. So from that post, I guess it's a 2014 model. Thanks for the links! I'm a guitarist who occasionally likes to play bass so I don't want to spend too much so I guess that Artec set looks like a good option! I do have a soldering iron but I'm not very experienced in electronics in general and since the electronics seem to have been tampered with and are currently not properly connected, could someone point me to a picture or post one of the wiring of the pots on a HB Jazz Bass?

You can find the VVT passive wiring here: guitarelectronics.com/jazz-bass-style-wiring-diagram/This site has lots of wiring schematics so quite useful also for other times. ;-)

DerAlex...thanks for the link! I'll look into it advb...thx for the info! Those settings were hard to find because I think I possibly missed that the last time. Oddly - since I never touched these settings since creating the account - the default for ' Participated - A thread you have participated in is updated' is set to 'Never'!? (same with ' Personal Message') which in my experience are almost always set to 'on' in most forums .

I had a last minute doubt before ordering that Artec set of tone controls that maybe my problem isn't with the tone control of the neck pickup, but the pickup itself! I know very little about electronics so I asked ChatGPT how I could test to see if my pickup was working or not and it told me to do a continuity test between the two wires of the PU and that failing the test would indicate a problem. It failed it, no continuity. ChatGPT gets a LOT of things wrong so I decided to test an old guitar PU I have lying around and...if failed as well so I'm assuming that ChatGPT's troubleshooting is incorrect.
Anybody know how to test if the PU is working or not? (the simplest method of course). Thanks in advance! chumbo

You should have something between 6-9 kOhm. Otherwise just solder the pickup dire To the output jack.

6-9 kOhm...yup, that's exactly what I have so I guess that's working then
