I started using plectrums only 2 years ago. At the moment I have the Jim Dunlop USA Nylon .73mm and it seems to hold much longer than the Harley Benton tortoise picks I had previously which loose their tip very fast.
I also made my self a pick from a Deer horn which I've got from my neighbor hunter. I dont use it because its just too hard, I seem to like softer picks. I also made one pick from a leather belt for my Bass playing which I like. It kind of gives the soft "finger" style sound.
I see some players using wooden, stone, crystal picks ...
Which ones do you prefer?

Medium Fender White Pearloid PicksI have 100s of these, they feel right in my hand and being white are easy to spot if you drop them. Shake any clothing with pockets that I own and one of these will likey fall out

I use mainly thicker picks for both guitar and bass (although I play fingerstyle on bass more). I cycle between a few Dugain picks (1 wood and 1 plastic), a wooden LAG pick (pointier than the Dugain), a Dunlop Max-Grip (nylon, 1.5mm) and a Dunlop felt pick. For acoustic I only use my fingertips and nails.
The Dugain and LAG picks are a bit pricey but they're well worth it if you keep track of your picks because of their durability. They have lasted me a year already and almost no signs of wear. Before these I was a Jazz III user, which are also very good picks.
If I play a song with a lot of strumming, I use whatever thin nylon or tortex pick I have lying around. I also really like the Dunlop Ultex range for when I want a thin but stiff pick (they emulate horn).
