Just put a set of chromes on my violin bass last night and im blown away with them. Fantastic thump out of her now but surprising lots of clarity too. Cant get over how silky smooth they are, these are my first foray into flat wound and im completely sold.

I like flats, but not a big fan of D'addario. They are typically a bit too bright for my tastes.

I totally agree about the brightness, they are probably brighter than the rotosound roundwounds I took off but they were a disappointment from day 1, must be a bad batch. Have you tried the labella brand, going by reviews on you tube they sound nice.

I actually met one of the D'addario family at a job I had. Nice guy! He was going to bring me a free set of guitar strings, but couldn't bring bass strings. I have heard of Labella strings and basses, but have never used either.

I have Labella flats on my mini-P and love them.
I was travelling to Miami so I was going to get some for my other basses, but they were all out, so I decided to try the Chromes. Turns out that they didn't make it on time either, so I ended up getting GHS Precision Flats to try (based on good opinions over on TB) and they are great, I wish I had brought more back.

Strings seem so much cheaper over in the states, I usually buy em off the local music store just to try to help them stay open and there is never much difference in the price. I used to love the ghs boomers when I was playing punk in a band I must give the flats a try.

Ive an old jazz base with quite worn frets that I want to put flats on but at this rate I will be spending nearly as much on strings as I do harley benton basses. Especially when you consider that I would have to buy the jb75 to put round wounds on!

As far as I know , flats aren't so tough on frets either , because of the smooth surface . Although Ive not played them long enough to say one way or the other . The Fender flats are ok too .
