Taylor and Gisbon have all started using Walnut on their guitars - Lowden (probably one of the most respected builders anywhere - and not far from where I live) have been using walnut for years. For me it has a nice crisp loud sound. maybe you'd be better with a mahogany back and sided guitar? CLD16 or CLA16?
I believe that the top is the most important and these have a very nice 2 piece spruce top.

I plan to get a small bodied one to use in alternate tunings so the mahagony or Harley Benton CLF-200 WN might be the way to go for that

Ah yes, those musicians that raise their eyebrows Even if the HB sound very good, even as good as their Martins and Gibsons they will NEVER EVER admit it as they have paid lots of money for theirs and by saying that HB sounds incredible they are basically throwing away all that invested money into a toilet Or maybe they can do like me ... I've sold my Fender Stratocaster U.S.A. standard 1983 and with the same money I have bought five HB guitar ... and I still survive and last but not least ..... Now I'm an happy guitarist ... a lot of frustastion was gone away

This CLD-41S WN rings and zings and will not provide that low end you desire. I would look for darker sounding models with mahogani back and sides. Maybe try get the CLD-15M, all Mahogani ? I had CLD-15M guitar, that one had much low end but lacking in treble, very earthy sounding. I dont sing but only fiddle around with chords and play solo lines too so need my acoustic to have some treble. I'm surprised a dreadnaught would sound that bright? Go to 2:04 of this recording I did, and judge your self This demo was about RODE M3 mic hence amp recording also present up front! https%3A//soundcloud.com/papa-dusko/rode-m3-ampacoustic

Reading through this thread and looking at the images on Thomann of Harley Benton CLA 16S and CLA 16SCE models which interest me, noting numerous similarities with my own Cort acoustic, those HBs exhibit all the specification and telltale aesthetic and material characteristics of being OEM Cort production from their Surabaya factory.
Also owning an Indonesion (Jakarta) manufactured Yamaha APX600, at any price point in that fiercly competitive sub $1k segment, I IMPRE over 2017 through 2019, Cort currently leave Yamaha behind as an also ran in terms of either sound or material specs and most importantly, production build quality and final QC. That's been my experience in buying five Yamaha and two Cort guitars over the past 18 month period. On that basis I'm keen to try a HB CLA model, although given the less favourable shipping cost from DE to AU for any single item and, unusually, more favourable local pricing of Cort here generally than ROW, I suspect I'll be conflicted tempted to compromise if paying a 35% premium over the CLA 16SCE for a Cort SFX1F as my next acoustic.
Can anyone owning a HB CLA 16SCE or SE tell me if the Fishman ISYS system fitted to them use the Sonicore pickups? The specs listed on Thomanns site don't state other than the preamp spec.

I always tune down so I guess any brightness would be minimal right?

Due to musical differences I've decided I can't work with myself any more.
