This guy has a recent video posted. He's a helpful chap who is also on the Katana facebook forum.

I thought so. I attempted to download a Katana driver this morning but it wouldn't launch. This is either because it's already installed after the laughable Tone Studio hookup/update shenanigans or else it's thought of another way to annoy me. Perhaps it just didn't like the colour of my trousers. Who knows? I'll see if it's listed next time I attach the Kat to my computer. I must warn it that it won't be getting many attempts to please me.

https%3A//soundcloud.com/salteedog/damascus2experiments You shouldn't need to download another driver if you've already done the tone-studio thing.
Anyway here's some of my experiments..for the last third of the song anyway (too many stray notes in the first 2 bars...this is all first take stuff!)

P.S> I'm assuming you aren't also plugged into your usual interface.

I had a chance to A/B the Katana and the Fender Champ tonight full out at rehearsal and the Fender was the winner by a good couple of lengths. There is still a lack of depth to the Katana and that brittleness that I had noticed before plus it just doesn't have the clean headroom of the 25 watt Champ. I reckon the Champ would go twice as loud but I wasn't brave enough to find out.
So it seems you'd need a 100w Katana for reasonable gig levels. Pity. I must get into that Tone Studio though and see if I can get a better universal tone setting. One thing that did sound good was fuzz into it from my ME70 mfx. A really good Steely Dan lead sound.

I suspected as much. The 50w is really loud but not super-clean loud. Even for bedroom playing I prefer the 25w setting these days if I want to avoid any distortion. Some folks reckon that using the onboard clean boost pedal can help but I haven't tried that (plus I don't gig so it's a moot point for me anyway). And I know the Jazz guitar forum guys came to the same conclusion too.
For crystal clean tones my Fender Stage is much better than the Katana ... as you say much more depth to the tone. It's hard to beat Fender cleans if that's the the tone you are going for. Pity I can only play the Stage at the volume barely past 1. There's almost 160 Watts of clean tone in that thing!

I did whack on the booster and it certainly up's the volume but I'd need to play with the settings more to see if I can get a cleaner one. The additional gain doesn't help the brittle sound. I'm sure a lot of this can be toned down in the interface. Guess I'm going to have to go there! Those Fender Stages are great aren't they? Is yours the 212?

Nope I have the 112se with one of those Fender blue label speakers. The distortion channel is a tad rough but the clean channel with a touch of spring reverb is terrific.
But the Katana is a great amp too for what it is. Much more of a Swiss army Knife than the Fender. And it's light! I wonder is the brittle sound you are hearing related to the speaker break in. I'm certain mine mellowed after a few weeks of use. In any case there are a ton of EQ options on board...too many really. There are also the unoffical 'sneaky amps' which I like ...I use a Matchless clean model and the Twin reverb model for my presets. (You lose them once you move the amp select knob but that's okay).

Another problem I was having with the Katana was directivity. What sounded nice from the amp blasting at my kidney sounded terribly harsh and bright when aimed at my head. I believe this is called 'beaming' and I know one simple solution it to make a gaffer tape a cross in front of the speaker (behind the grill if aesthetics worry you). But even better seems to be a foam doughnut placed in the baffle with a 3" opening at the centre to even up the sound. Here's a great thread on it: The Mitchell Donut sound baffle

Interesting stuff about the baffles...something I never considered before. One thing I do know that makes a huge difference with the open backed cabs is how they are positioned with regard to corners or walls close behind them.

True about the placing of an open back. Mind you nothing makes them as directional as a closed back. I was reading more on the use of acoustic foam and one fellah was using it inside his closed back amp on the floor and rear wall of the amp to slow down/tame the reflected sound and said it gave a wider, less directional feel. By the way, I'm sure when I first went into the Tone Studio I was faced with a 'universal EQ' settings page. Since then I'vebee unable to find it, just the panel EQ knobs. Am I missing something? >EDIT Ah, got it. In the system tab along with interesting USB DI recording level adjustment and cabinet resonance. Haven't found the 'Jay Mitchell Donut' setting yet though.

BTW...I like to read forums populated by Jazz and Country players to provide a contrast to the legions of shreddy, high gain and classic rock players that seem to constitute the majority of the guitar playing internet.

Actually the opposite, salteedog. It has a sharper attack than the Fender. That's the brittleness again. I sure hope I can tame it. It bums me out.

Ah okay. I know it's another one of those 'truth or fiction' guitar debates but the consensus is the speaker softens with a bit of break-in. My own perception is that this was certainly the case but if you were to ask me to back it up with scientific evidence then I'll fall short. In the meantime, try out the onboard compressor. There are 6 varieties onboard:- -Boss Comp -Hi Band - Light - D-Comp - Orange - Fat
