Im getting some crackling sound from the amp! This has nothign to do with pots as I didn't touch them. Started today! These tubes are the original stock tubes that came with the amp! So never changed ... for 10 years They are TAD tubes; 2x6l6 47 Euro 3xECC83 49 Euros Shipping 8 Euros Total 104 Euros (ouch) ... looking into buying a Katana Amp ... I think I have to sell my SC-550 FT !

I always wonder whether that crackling is coming from caps or even dry solder joints. I have had it on 2 solid states as well.

Played again last night and the crackling sound was not there. Im sure its the Tubes giving their last! Im the 3rd owner and these tubes are the original stock ones!
If it was solder joints or caps the crackling sound would still be there no?

Which amp is this che? I have an old SS Peavey with a crackly sound that can be there or not when you switch on or it may build up. I have it with an SS Tokai occasionally and it will go if you give it a shake. I've heard it on an SS Rumble but also on a tubed Peavey Classic. I'd love to sit them all in front of an amp guru for them to say, "that one's a pot, that's the tubes, that's a cap" but they mostly do what I do and just frown so I don't let them open them up.

Most preamp tubes (ECC83) have a expected lifespan of about 10.000 hours! Power tubes have a shorter lifespan, so if you want to replace tubes try those at first.

Maybe change the positions of the pre-amp tubes? Could be a connection thing...or one tube starting to fail. See if that makes a difference.

I just realized that I played on Pentode and switched back to Triode. Will see if that fixes the issue.
i think it would give me peace to know my tubes are new and keep the old ones as spare in case one dies on me.
Will have money for new tubes at the end of the month. Still have time to try and figure out where that sound comes from.
What means 12AX7 A and B and C ? This amp has 2 A's and 1 B!

Reseasrched a bit more and found out that Pre-amp tubes NEED NO Biasing ! Thats great as JJ ecc83 is sold for 9 Eur piece which is less than the TAD!
The Power tubes need biasing if you use differrent type/brand so I'll stick to the same ones.

My Champ was made in 1991 or 1992. I has been gigged regularly and played constantly. If I use this article as a guide I reckon the tubes may last me another ten years or so. They are the original 6L6s and sound heavenly. I hope the tone doesn't change when they eventually say sayonara. Mind you, my ears will probably have gone by then if this site has anything to say on THAT subject: Hearing loss with age.I wonder whether a tube's tendency towards breakup has any influence on it's life span? My 6L6s won't breakup at all easily and this presumably means they are not being overdriven beyond their comfort. Maybe EL84s are having the life knocked out of them far more as they crunch away?

Was ready to write how that sound was gone just to hear it again a minute ago I think its time to change them. Full Stop! Would hate to have the amp go dead or noisy on me during our next rehersal/jam! The first owner was a full on Metal dude who sold it becasue his wife told him to Im sure he pushed this amp a bit. The second owner is an older gentleman who played only his acoustic guitar through it! He said he never changed the tubes and the first guy had it all stock!

What I could do is buy a pair of same 6L6 just in case one dies on me! Preamp tubes are of less importance as I can play the 6L6's via the FX Loop! Then buy a set of JJ pre-tubes later! Would love to get another speaker for this Bug V55 to see if it can inspire some nicer OD-ed tones. So far Im getting only one usable tone and that one is chunky! Im looking at the Josh Smith JS-1250 Eminence! He loves Fender and Vox and always wanted to get something between the two. He came up with this one! Its rated 50 Watts but he stated that it can handle much more so in my 55 watts played through the Triode (less power) it will be just fine. And the bright channel also has less power than the Normal channel. Im sure I will never play on full 55 watts!

Oh boy oh boy the amp noise would come and go away and I kept on thinking my tubes are failing until I realised that the noise was ONLY THERE when I had iPhone in my pocket while playing the guitar of course the pickups were picking up the phone signals Mystery solved and I will not be buying new tubes for now! Instead will try and focus on getting other stuff for my studio. Monitors would be great as Im missing that when my bandmates are around! The bassist usually brings his Presonus 5" which sounds awesome both playing his bass through it and for playing music through it! Will get the smaller version I think as my new studio space will have a lower ceiling and smaller room.

Can't imagine going to my bands rehearsal and tubes failing me, it's upsetting this thought is so I ordered both the power and pre amp tubes from Thomann.
Same pair of 6L6 from TAD and JJ pre amp tubes as they are the cheapest but with good reviews.
90 Euros! Ouch!
