There was a pleasant development yesterday. After reading defjef's post about getting a fine tube amp I got GAS issues and dived into the second hand web market here in Denmark. Not many places to look but the so called DBA which is the danish eBay.
I could maybe stretch myself to about 700 Danish Crowns at most which is about 95 Euros. So I looked and looked and found some amps which either have a broken Reverb or one channel is not working properly etc ... Some are fine but far far far away and driving over to get them would involve paying the bridge toll which cost as much as the amp.
I was looking for both solid state and tubes but leaning towards the tube amps. The closest to me were the Peavey Envoy Transtube, Fender FM212R (broken reverb), Peavey Royal 8 (all tube amp) and even the modeling Roland Cube 30x.
I know how some think tube amps are overrated etc (you know the stories) but for me they are just that, stories and not my first hand experience and since we all perceive sound differently those stories might just be misleading. So I really am leaning towards an all tube amp. I dont need a valve amp with many valves so changing them should not be expensive.
My wife noticed my frustrations and felt pity for my sad soul so she decided to buy me an amp, a tube amp that is, because I was talking about it for so long (and I guess she is just fed up with me daydreaming about it and blabbing about it all the time). What a nice gesture. She will pay no more than 1400 dkk (188 Eur).
So now Im hunting for a tube amp which is to be used at home and for recording and should have a connection for an ext. cabinet (in case I get some in time).
I know 12" speaker is just sweet but after listening to some demos of the FAME Sweet Baby, Laney Cub10 and Bugera V5, I am more than sure smaller speakers can also deliver nicely indeed.
Now to the amps I am looking at; NOTE ! NOTE ! NOTE ! I am looking for a dynamic warm clean sound, with some nice overdrive, mostly Jazz and Blues sound.
So that being said ...
There is a Laney Cub10 second hand for 1000 dkk (135 Eur). The guy used it only for a short while in home practice and was not used for very long. He bought another amp that suits his needs better and now decided to sell this one. Apparently all is as new. I can check this of course at his place.
This amp has a 10" HH speaker. It has 4 tubes (2+2).
In this demo it sounds awesome!
The second amp Im looking at is the FAME Sweet Baby at Music Store and this amp also sounds awesome in this demo
The 3rd amp is the Bugera V5 Infinium (also from Music Store because they ship to Dk for free)
Any tips?
