I find that Comanche G&L very tempting too but it's probably expensive and I have three Strat's already. Of course I ought to have the latest state of evolution. Here's one. It's more money than my three Strat's together

Try popping your pickups in a vice and bending them to G&L proportions . Wouldn't that work?

If I had an expensive Fender, I would sell it to buy a G&L. Really. I formally refuse the "vintage" argument. The man knew what he was doing when he improved things. Anyway, nostalgia's not what it used to be

There's a thread on these here ttmax . We all seemed to be reasonably impressed. I like the thin finishes and the hardware. They seem pretty good for the price.

I did a little read about those Wide Range pickups in my Guitar Source Book. Seems they are less like the G&L ones than I had thought. I was muddling those with Leo's Precision pups that do a similar thing to the G&L ones. According to me book these were designed by Seth Lover - the PAF man - who had jumped ship from Gibson to Fender. Underneath that cover there are two full length coils each with three plain magnet slugs as well as the three screw ones that are visible through the cover. As MartinB pointed out CuNiFe was used for the magnets as it is the only magnet material that was readily available and soft enough to take a thread for the screw. Which begs the question, what do those guys do who try to convert their PAF type humbuckers into Wide Range ones? Glue their magnetic slugs in?

I did some searching too and found a few comparison videos. I like the idea of a clearer humbucker, but I suppose we got there through other ways in the meantime and I still insist on coil split or parallel switching anyway.
This left me wondering if I would actually like the old, original Wide Range pick-ups (on the black guitar):
But I know I would have to hear them for myself.

And here's a comparison of the original with two modern, non-Fender alternatives. I like the look of these Telecasters. They all sound good to me, better than that other video..

Pity that control plate doesn't fit the scratchplate cutout but it's a nice look. Actually, is it the scratchplate that's wrong? It doesn't seem to fit the lower horn either. Those knob tops are fancy and look, even the saddles are etched or engraved.

And the headstock is special too:

I love the bridge and control plates on that.
