This guy sanded down his SC-450 (Plus?) and didn't seem to find a veneer underneath the varnish. I wonder how he expected not to damage it, though. Whatever it is, I would expect it to be thin in the best of cases. Don't try this at home

I thought they were thin veneer but really don't mind. Fake Gibson fake flame. I'll take an HB every time for the price. I guess the dude will have to turn it into a gold top now; not all bad.

That's curious. The body binding is not binding but part of a layer of plastic? I'd like a closer look at that.

The plastic guitars as Ward Airline, Kay won grammy in the hands of Jack White

Yes DefJes it's the tone that counts. Perhaps the charisma of the sound of HB guitars derived by this blend of wood and synthetic not organic material (or a mix beetwen organic and not organic material ... Blackwood tek plus wood plus plastic ...)that give to HB this unique sound and feel

If it looks good & sounds good be happy....

This is a poor quality video and fails to provide conclusive proof of the author's claims.

I agree Vincent that the video doesn't delve deep enough but it's not the only instance of this model appearing to have no AAA maple top and that's worrying. The controversial figure Tony McKenkie seems to discover a similar thing and I think it's time Thomann at least shed some light on what is going on. I'm not the least bit worried about having a flame maple top myself but anyone who is needs to feel confident that what they are buying is what's described. At the moment it seems that Thomann can describe any guitar as anything they like and then not supply it. I have never known it to be so bad. I realise that dealing on Aliexpress is a lottery but we aren't dealing with China via Aliexpress, we are buying from Germany within the EU and standards are supposed to be one hell of a lot higher. Otherwise me might just as well purchase from Aliexpress.

Not the same guitar but the Harley Benton SC-450Plus VB Vintage Series is currently showing €133.61
From the specs "Arched top: AAA flamed maple." Does not say solid cap or even a veneer. It certainly does not say photo flame but at that price I would expect it to be. Fine for me to say that because I am old and wise to some of the tricks in the trade but if an unsuspecting newbie discovers that they have a toffee-wrapper-top and it was not sold as such they will have good reason to be upset.
Tony speaks as he finds. His videos are not monetized and never have been. There are no flashing-banner adds on his website. He is not and never has been paid to do any gear review.

Is that the guy who took a chainsaw to a SC-450plus on account of it having sub-optimally drilled bridge stud-holes? Seemed a tad extreme. Clearly not motivated by money. Maybe it's notoriety he's after?

Whatever it is made of, a top is to be judged by the way it looks since its primary purpose is aesthetics. Here's a new statement on how those of the new Fusion models look very thin, shallow and basically disappointing up close:
