Yes 'distortion' and 'overdrive' pedals really do overlap blindwilly3fingers. Hard clipping seems to have something to do with it but perhaps the descriptive name chosen by the manufacturer is based more on where they want to sit the pedal in their lineup and who they want to buy it. Certainly the Boss DS1 that he showed is a distortion pedal by name yet Josh calls that type of pedal a "1970s style overdrive slash maybe distortion". I did notice at second viewing that there was a tiny flash of a pic of the Rat just after he said that so you could be right...ish!

I maybe wrong but I assumed distortion pedals were all in the high gain metal territory? I know they can overlap but then some use fuzz as overdive/distortion. It's a bit of a minefield to say the least.. π³

My Biyang Mouse is a fairly faithful Rat clone afaik, I haven't a clue how it works, I think it's an Op Amp pedal but could be totally wrong, it goes from an OD type sound, through distortion territory into mild fuzz depending on where you put the gain knob. I know of a few rock bands who use distortion pedals of varying types.

I assume that overdrive pedals all overdrive something inside the pedal be it hard clipping, soft clipping, cascade of transistors, otherwise it's just a boost pedal boosting the amp. The problem I have is that as I understand it that's what a distortion pedal does too

The problem I have is that as I understand it that's what a distortion pedal does too That's what I thought I had come to understand about the Tubescreamer. I thought I'd misunderstood it all my life until a recent moment of clarity, and that it was in fact designed to make your pre amp tubes scream with some additional tonal mojo, not to sound like pre amp tubes screaming. But now I'm not so sure. I'm thinking it does both and so do most other overdrives. So now we need to know where the distortion is coming from that makes the distinction...and why Josh seemed reluctant to totally call a DS1 circuit a full distortion style. He clearly feels it's a bit of both.

My take from the OD video was that an OD pedal can colour your sound but doesn't necessarily do so, you can use the volume to boost your signal somewhat but it should take your signal and transform it into an overdriven signal with the signature sound of whatever type of pedal it is.

OK MartinB I'm wrong π€ So to add to this what is crunch? Overdrive or distortion? As far as I understand (admittedly not a lot) it's all a form of distortion? Again I'm probably wrong but overdriving the tubes/pre amp to break up is causing it to mildly distort? Is it 3 categories? 1. OD: crunch/Edge of break up mild distortion, low gain. 2. Distortion: mid to high gain. 3. Fuzz: versatile noise? So you go 1. Soft clipping. 2. Hard clipping. 3. Square clipping. Now if only it was that simple with pedals. π The buggers aren't playing fair designing hard clipped pedals to sound like they are soft clipped. Fuzz pedals like metal muff it's just not cricket! I don't want to play anymore! I'm taking my ball and going home!!!

ooo I think I know this one? Fuzz is square wave or near square wave distortion. I could be wrong, I'll get me coat

Your correct MartinB 9.30 last orders, I don't usually go to the pub until then! π’ I usually have a day trip up town this week every year. As my son's birthday is 4 days before mine, him and his girlfriend , me and the mrs. I usually get a couple of hours around tin pan alley, sadly it won't be happening this year.
