Back on Dec 8th I placed my order for a Harley Benton SC-Custom FR VB.I think my initial email from Thomann was it will be in stock Jan 1st and will ship. That then changed to Feb 1st and now it has changed again to March 1st.This will be my first Harley Benton guitar, all my other guitar's are high end Ibanez and Charvel guitars. The spec's on this HB sound to good to be true so I ordered it.......worst case if it plays like crap it still will look bitchin hanging on my wall as eye candy.So......how long is the longest you've waited for a Thomann HB backorder on a guitar?

Every time it get's down to 3-4 week's within a week it goes back up to 6-7 weeks.I guess the sweatshop that assemble's their guitar's is not reliable anymore.Anyhoo......that's bad business.I had my ESP custom shop built and delivered in 2 months. You can't tell me a $285 guitar take's over 4 month's to build/assemble/ship.

That's the extra price of cheap products. They are made the most efficient way possible and that is the very opposite of "on demand". As to not knowing when they get stuff, this is just another example of the same. They do know when they get things but the web site is not kept up to date at all times nor have they invested any work into a system that makes their customer service team able to find out. All these things would be extra work and extra cost.

No Leo, they do not.
Just because in more and more cases of back ordered guitars, Thoman is waiting for having a minimum number of backorders to order a batch of the item. So, that means that the lead time itself is defined by the number of customer's backorders
... Reason why I personnally would not place a backorder, because the lead time of delivery is way too much randomised.I hapenned to place such backorders in my professional life, but in this vey acurate case, I prefer to wait ( or not ) for an item that is in stock

They do not know when they will order things next, yes, that's most probably right. Once they do, I wouldn't think the reliability of suppliers is the issue.

But we can feel grateful when the orders finally arrive?

But we can feel grateful when the orders finally arrive? Not grateful, simply educated about what that amount of money can buy in a natural business environment.

I am not sure how this applies to order fulfilment and ever changing wait times is respect of pre-orders.

So for example in what you were saying is if I was the only person to order that out of stock guitar then I would never get it because Thomann didn't receive enough order's to make it worth their while for production?

Yes that can occur, and that's the accurate reason why I wouldn't place a back order : the odds are not favourable for a decent lead time of delivery
